12. The method

That we experience is all we know. But what is a mental experience? That is the central question in this chapter. To answer that, we need to understand how experiences «work». This mechanism must be able to explain both how everything possible comes to be and also how everything interacts.

Now we are going to start with the heavier material. It is not heavy because it is complicated, but because what I am presenting is foreign. Most people, and in particular scientists, think differently than I do.

At this stage in the story, you are presented with four central concepts that will be repeated in everything that follows. Therefore, read this short chapter as carefully as possible. See if you can take it in and understand it.

If it gets too strange and floating, don't judge and don't reject the explanations. Stay tuned because I will illuminate these four «main laws» from many angles later. You will gradually see that what I say is common sense and sound logic.

The four concepts are:
  • Emergence
  • Complexity dynamics
  • Energy, understood in a new way so that change is central
  • Reverse logic
So what is it to experience?

You have to ask yourself again.

Even if you experience other people around you claiming that they too experience, you can never know that it is true. I can tell you how I experience it, and then I hear you say that you agree and experience the same thing.

No foolproof scientific method reveals how others experience or that they experience at all. We are in a completely subjective landscape.

So you have to listen to my experience of experiencing. Then you have to consider whether you agree. And vice versa.
