22. Reversed causality
This is the theory’s most fundamental and most controversial claim.
In modern science causality is normally understood as a movement from the bottom up. Physical processes are assumed to come first, while experience, consciousness, meaning and understanding arise as later products of the organisation of matter. The brain creates thoughts. Neural activity creates feelings. Physical processes create the observer.
The EC/HE theory reverses this causal direction completely.
In this model causality runs from KNOWING through experience to manifest structure. The abstract comes before the manifest. Understanding comes before what is understood. Observation comes before the observed. Experience comes before what is experienced as physical reality.
This does not mean that the physical world is unreal. On the contrary — the physical world is completely real as experience. But it is not ontologically primary. What modern science describes as matter, energy, space, time, fields and particles represents stable manifestations that arise through the EC and further organisation in KNOWING.
The brain therefore does not create consciousness. The brain is how certain relational structures in consciousness are experienced. Thoughts do not create meaning. Meaning is the foundation that makes thoughts possible. Matter does not create the observer. The observer is the precondition for matter to be able to manifest itself as experience.
This entails that the entire modern understanding of the relation between subject and object must be reorganised. It is not the observer that is located inside the universe. The universe is located within observation.
The consequences are far-reaching. If causality actually runs from KNOWING to manifestation, it follows that all physical structures, biological organisms, psychological processes and cultural systems must be understood as stabilised relational patterns in experience. What appears as an outer material reality is then the manifest side of a far deeper relational and experience-based dynamic.
This does not mean that physics, biology or neuroscience are rejected. Their observations remain valid. What is reorganised is the ontological understanding of what the observations describe. The EC/HE theory does not claim that modern science has mapped the wrong reality. It claims that science has described the manifestation correctly, but misunderstood the causal direction.
Everything that follows in this theory rests on this one inversion.
If causality runs from matter to consciousness, the entire theory collapses.
If causality runs from KNOWING through experience to manifestation, the rest of the mechanism follows as a consequence.
